This week's challenge is to choose leaner cuts of meats over those higher in fat.
Protein is an essential part of any diet. It is crucial to the structure of virtually every part of our body and helps us manufacture enzymes and hormones that allow our bodies to function properly. In addition, it gives us energy and keeps our metabolism humming. However, many sources of protein also have the potential to come loaded with saturated fat. Luckily, there are many lean options to choose from if you simply decide to make the switch. Here are a few tips:
1. Beef: The leanest cuts of beef are those that include the word "round" or "loin" in their name. Also, when choosing ground beef, choose 95% lean ground beef or higher.
2. Poultry: In general, poultry is a leaner choice than red meat. However, avoid poultry skin and dark meats, which is where most of the fat resides in poultry. The best type of poultry is skinless turkey breast.
3. Pork: Most cuts of pork tend to be higher in fat than both beef and poultry. Try to avoid.
Good luck!
